Padlock Concept
Abus SpeedShackle
+ SmartShackle
A duo of mechanical and smart padlock concepts designed for enhanced security and quick access.
Designed during a sponsored studio in Wuppertal, Germany.
Modeled in Rhino. Rendered in Blender.

The Problem
Padlocks are often awkward to use, either due to the shape of the latch its connected to or because of the
U-shaped shackle.
Handling issues can lead to slow and complicated application or removal of the padlock.
Speed and handling are extremely important when the user needs to repeatedly access the same property, such as a school locker.

Target User
School students or gym members who use lockers, school or gym faculty, maintenance workers, storage
unit owners, property owners.
Use Case
For when users need to apply and remove padlocks quickly and hassle-free.

Manufacturing Strategy
Because of the circular shape of the shackle, the SpeedShackle family cannot be produced using the same methods as existing padlock designs.
To remedy this, one chassis consisting of 2 parts are molded and then milled to add the slider and lock cylinder features for the SpeedShackle or the fingerprint indentation for the SmartShackle.
This makes the circular shackle design possible and helps reduce manufacturing costs.
